It's no longer news that AI is taking over a lot of work in customer service. In EV charging, too, AI agents are handling a growing share of conversations on their own. They're available day and night, and there's no waiting on hold. Still, not every question is one you want AI to handle, and not every customer wants to talk to AI.
That's why we're now partnering with Salesupply, a specialised e-mobility contact centre with more than 15 years of experience. Joe looks into questions and resolves them, day and night. The people at Salesupply step in when a customer would rather speak to a person, or when a question is better suited to a human. Together they form one support model for operators.
So the real question isn't whether AI replaces people, but how you combine the two. The operators who win in the coming years won't take people out of support. They'll combine humans and AI into a better customer experience, and they'll get the balance right.
Why charging support is different
Good support for EV charging needs two things at once.
Charging expertise. Many questions can't be answered with a standard script. Why won't a charging session start? Why does a card work at one charger but not at another? How is the amount on the invoice calculated? That knowledge often sits with a few experienced colleagues, and when they leave, it leaves with them.
A human touch. Customers want to feel heard and to see their problem solved. Chargers are becoming more and more alike. How you treat your customers is what sets you apart.
Most support teams are good at one of the two, but rarely at both.
What Joe does, and where a human takes over
Joe doesn't just give a quick answer. Joe looks into it for you: which charger it is, what happened with the session, how the invoice was put together. Then Joe gives an answer that fits your situation. Joe does this day and night, in any language, and the fortieth conversation gets just as much attention as the first.
There's still a role for people, for two reasons.
Some tasks you'd rather have a person handle. A customer who sees a charging session billed twice for the third time has had enough. Joe can figure out what went wrong, but sometimes you deliberately want that conversation with a person who listens, apologises and puts it right.
Some people need a human. Not everyone finds it easy yet to talk to AI. Anyone who'd rather have a person on the line should be able to get one. There's nothing wrong with that.
Gill Fisher, Director of Service Process Design at Booking.com, put it well in March 2026: as AI takes on more of the work, what's left for people are "the really emotional things, complex cases". That's exactly where you win or lose your customers' trust.
So the best model isn't AI or people. It's AI that looks into problems and resolves them where it can, with a person ready where that works better.
How Joe and Salesupply work together
Joe is your EV support sidekick, built by Plugz. Joe answers the phone day and night, with no queue, and helps callers with a charger that won't start, a charging card that doesn't work, or questions about invoices and rates. Every caller gets a well-researched answer, whether they call on a Tuesday morning or at three o'clock on a Sunday night.
Would the caller rather speak to a person, or is it a question you want a human to handle? Then the call goes to a Salesupply agent, who receives everything Joe has already found out: who the caller is, which charger it's about and what has already been tried. The caller doesn't have to tell their story again.
For you as an operator, it's one offering, not two separate contracts. And you decide what Joe handles and what you leave to people. Start small and expand once you see it working. Moving to AI support isn't a switch you flip. It's a transition you make step by step. That way, you never put your customers' experience at risk.
Finally
Within two years, nearly every operator will use some form of AI in customer service. The difference won't be whether you use AI, but how you combine it with people who really understand charging.
Human + AI isn't a compromise. It's how you help every customer well, in every conversation.
